Suggest Treatment For Cirrhosis Of The Liver

default
Posted on Mon, 12 Jun 2017
Question: My best friend is unconscious (for 2 days now) in ICU. The Dr.s have concluded she is suffering from cirrhosis of the liver. Knowing her history of drug and alcohol abuse as well as having Hep c I would say they are correct. My questions is how lethal is this diagnosis. What are her options going forward? I am pretty sure the damage is extensive at this point in her life. i need to prepare her and myself for either a strategy for a longer and better life or it is time to get affairs in order. Thank you in advance for any and all information you can provide.

Brief Answer:
Child pugh scoring and prognosis

Detailed Answer:
Hello and Welcome

I appreciate your concern

The Child-Pugh scoring system consists of five clinical features to assess the prognosis and survival rates in patients with chronic liver disease and cirrhosis.

These include

Total bilirubin
Serum albumin
PT INR
Ascites
Hepatic encephalopathy

Based on these values , sets of patients are stratified into classes A, B and C with C having the worst prognosis. Each parameter with worsening function has a point to contribute.

One year survival in Child class C patients is 45 %. With Alcohol abuse history, one automatically would go down the ladder on the transplant list, too.

The above considerations/ facts should be taken into account before taking any decision related to your friend. You may discuss the prognosis with her treating physician and ask about her Child pugh score accordingly. This will give you a better idea.

Wishing you best of health

Thanks
