Suggest Treatment For Chronic Pain In Hips During Pregnancy

default
Posted on Thu, 9 Oct 2014
Question: Hi. I am 6.5 weeks pregnant and have chronic pain in my hips that require surgery again and chronic anxiety. I currently am taking Tramadol, Zoloft and Zanax only if I am feeling very anxious. I know it's not ideal to be on these medications but, I have a high profile job and 3 boys under the age of 9.

Can you please fill me in on your opinion of the medications and the safety during this miracle time in my life. Thank you!

Brief Answer:
THESE DRUGS ARE NOT SAFE DURING PREGNANCY.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thanks for writing to us.

First thing, all these drugs (Tramadol, Zoloft & Xanax) are NOT recommended during pregnancy period (especially in the FIRST trimester). External medicines are MOST VULNERABLE to growing fetus as ORGANOGENESIS takes place in this time.

TRAMADOL and ZOLOFT are Pregnancy Category -C drugs. Animal reproduction studies have shown an adverse effect on the fetus and there are NO adequate and well-controlled studies in humans, but potential benefits may warrant use of the drug in pregnant women despite potential risks.

XANAX (Alprazolam) is Pregnancy Category -D drug. There is POSITIVE evidence of human fetal risk based on adverse reaction data from marketing experience studies in humans or investigation but potential benefits may warrant use of the drug in pregnant women despite potential risks.

To SUMMARIZE, I suggest you to consult with your Obstetrician and Physician regarding this for proper assessment and using these drugs effectively.

Hope, it helps for your information. Kindly, close the discussion if you don't have any other query.

Wish your good health and take care yourself.

Regards,
Dr S Patra
