Question: I am 71 and have trouble with constipation for several years.I go 3-5 days with out a bowel movement. then it takes hours when I do have one and it.s pain

I read carefully your query.

First you need to make some diet and lifestyle changes to improve constipation.It is very important to take the right amount of fibers in your diet so you can have normal bowel movements.
I would suggest to eat foods high in fibers like XXXXXXX fruits, vegetables, prune juice and nuts.You should take up to 35 g fibers a day .Make sure to increase the fiber intake gradually ,every week to prevent bloating and gas.
You should drink plenty of water (this is very important when increasing the fiber intake).Try to increase your daily physical activity like walking.
Try to obtain a bowel movement every morning or after a meal.

If all these ,doesn't seem to improve constipation ,you may need to take on otc laxative like a fiber supplement like Metamucil Powder: 3.4 g (mix with 8 oz liquid) once a day or Methylcellulose but this you need to discuss with your general physician.
