Question: i have AFib and was admitted to the hospital because of serious swelling in my feet and legs. I was also having shortness of breath and could not lie on my back. the dr at the hospital prescribed amlodinpine daily ,lasix 40 mg twice daily, lisiniopril 10 mg daily. I also take synthroid 25mg twice daily. I do not have chest pain, never, and have never been diag osed with coronary artery disease. I think the amlodipine causes a little discomfort in my chest. I have have never had any artery testing done. I would like my answer to be from a cardiologist, and the question is should I take amlodipine, even if I do not have angina. my right ear rings loud since taking these meds. I have severe hearing loss in right ear because of life saving meds seven years ago. lots of seniors lose hearing because of strong medications.

Detailed Answer:
Hello!

Welcome and thank you for asking on HCM!

Regarding your concern, I would explain that the chest discomfort could be related to gastritis or gastro-esophageal reflux. I would recommend trying omeprazole. If the chest discomfort is relieved by this drug, you should consider gastritis or gastro-esophageal reflux as the main cause of your complaint. In such case a fibrogastroscopy would be necessary.

Chest discomfort is not a known adverse effect related to amlodipine.

But, considering the fact that amlodipine can cause leg swelling as an adverse effect and you have this problem, I would not recommend taking it. You should discuss with your doctor on the possibility of switching into another anti-hypertensive therapy.

The ear ringing could be related to thyroid dysfunction. For this reason, I would recommend checking your thyroid hormone levels, in order to adjust the dose of synthroid if necessary.

You should discuss with your doctor on the above issues.

Hope you will find this answer helpful!

Kind regards,

Dr. Iliri
