Posted on Mon, 30 Mar 2015
Question: My father-in-law, 64 years old, has been diagnosed with a blockage in tear gland in the left eye, due to which his eyes water unconditionally sometimes. He has undergone syringing 4 times but not much relief. He has also been told that the ideal solution is surgery but at his age, it is not recommended. As of now,he takes Tear Natural Forte eye drops 2-3 times daily. Need a second opinion. Also advise if this could worsen further or happen to the other eye as well.

Brief Answer:
The definitive treatment is by surgery.

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Welcome to Health care magic

I am Dr. DADAPEER K, an Ophthalmologist and I will be answering your question.

I reviewed your history. It seems from the history that your father-in-law is having watering in eye because of blockage in the lacrimal sac.
The definitive treatment for this condition as told by your doctor is surgery in the from of dacryocystorhinostomy.

This is not a contagious disease but it may or may not involve the other eye.
The only risk is risk of infection.

He can undergo the surgery, otherwise he can undergo a simpler surgery called as dacryocystectomy. This will make the eye safe and prevent any risk of infection.

One more alternative is to undergo laser dacryocystorhinostomy. As this a simple procedure he can undergo this procedure.

Hope I have answered your question and the information is helpful to you.
Do write back to me for further questions.

Thank you
