Suggest Treatment For Bipolar Disorder

Posted on Mon, 27 Feb 2017
Question: hello, this message is for Dr. XXXXXXX I can't find your go to online address so I will ask here. As pertaining to past questions, this is in regards to my bipolar disorder. I have a psychiatrist that I see on a regular basis, but I will not see her until the end of March. I am only taking depakote and lamictal now, unlike before I became a new patient of hers, with my old psychiatrist, where I was taking an antidepressant along with the mood stabilizer. I have been doing really good up until lately. I have been crying a little more than usual. I'm going to pain management for my back because it has become unbearable since my last hip surgery. I have had them both replaced. I've also been to a chiropractor who has since adjusted my back, he said one of my legs were two inches shorter than the other. So, I don't know if I'm depressed or if I'm sad because of the pain. I'm pretty much taking it minute by minute. Trying to get through the days. I try to rationalize, that it could be worse, I mean I could have no legs at all. Anyway, I don't really know what I'm asking. I don't know if I need an antidepressant or what. Thank you for listening. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Brief Answer:
I do not think antidepressant required at this stage

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for writing back to me and a humble sorry for delayed reply.

I have gone through the fresh details and pleased to know that there is reduction in number of medications while you are doing OK in regard to bipolar disorder.

In my opinion your thinking is straight and your rationalisation has valid ground. In addition I also like to inform you that occasional crying is ok when there is pain and you have been informed that there is shortening of leg.

I feel rather than adding antidepressant we need to manage the pain at first place as it is possible that with pain management the crying spells will be fewer and shorter in compare to todays situation.

In case no medicine helping you in the pain we can use psychotropics which has potent effect on depression as well as pain.

I hope this answers you.
