Posted on Thu, 26 Feb 2015
Question: my father is alcoholic since last 25 years.right now he stays with himself, does not talk much.avoid conversation with everyone.talks as least as possible.but when he is drunk he fights with my mom for no reason.if there is no topic to talk,he will bring one of no importance and will start saying i have to do this,i have to do that. he will start discussing the same thing that has been discussed already. he pretends like there are many problems in his life that's why he is worried, even if there is no problem really. he gets disturbed even by a smallest task he has to do. he is happy to give us money and let us do our work on our own as we wish .but if he has to do something he gets anxious.some important points i would like to mention-
1.he brings back old topics for fight which are gone long time ago.
2.when his alcohol INTOXICATION goes, he becomes normal and pretend like nothing happened when he was drunk.and when we remind him of what he was doing ,he starts blaming us that we are lier's '.but in his mind he knows that he was behaving badly but he cant accept that.
3.when he is drunk and fighting with us and suppose a phone call comes or a outsider comes he starts behaving normally like nothing was happening there.
4.he cries many times for no reason, like he wants us to believe that he has many problems in life.
5.he abuses my mom to go to his brothers home and my sisters to go there husbands when the come to home. but when my mom goes for few days to his brother in anger, my dad start missing my mom. then he will call her everday and will not drink and then will go there to bring her back. but again after few days its again same.

p.s.- my mom says he was not like this earlier, but has become like this since last 10 years.

ps. 4 months ago i found out i have obsessive compulsive disorder. and i am taking medication for that.

so what to do about him?

Brief Answer:
This is alcohol dependence disorder with ? depression

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for using healthcaremagic.

I read your query and understand your concerns.

From the available description it appears that he is addicted to alcohol and suffering from depressive disorder along with that. It is possible that his abnormal behaviour is solely due to alcohol abuse as appears from your description.

It is common for addicted person to blame others for his own mistakes as they become helpless with time. They may have slight motive to stop drinking but they find it very difficult to initiate.

His symptoms of less talkativeness, crying spells and staying alone indicates that he is also suffering with depression.

In my view you need to consult a psychiatrist in person as he may need treatment after hospitalization. It is very difficult to stop treatment if the patient is not motivated enough. Hospitalization will ensure motivation as well as make the transition easy from alcohol addiction to normalcy.

I must assure you that it is treatable condition and hospitalization is required in such cases. If he stops suddenly for long duration there may be risk to his health without medical supervision.

Hope this helps you.
If you have any more questions feel free to write back to me.
Thanks and regards

what if he is not willing to stop it and he is not willing to take medication. because when he is drunk he will not listen anything and when he is not drunk he feels very uncomfortable and anxious while talking.

so in this case is there a way we can give him anti-craving medicine as a medicine for some other purpose like he feels likes his stomach is getting bigger. then after some time we can make him understand and start complete treatment.??

also i am pretty sure he has ocd like me. because we have similarities that happens in ocd.

Brief Answer:
it can be done

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for reverting back to me.

If he is not willing to stop or take medication he can persuaded by psychiatrist to do so. The psychiatrist will explain each and every thing required for his proper management.

I am not against your suggestion of concealing medication but I need to inform you that this is guarantee that it will not be successful. Without patient involvement we can not achieve anything.
Yes it is possible that you can start treatment for OCD from the psychiatrist and improve his motivation. With time he may be motivated to quit alcohol and take medication.

Concealing information from him will make him more rigid to accept medication.

I hope you understand this.
Thanks and regards

i agree with you completely. i am satisfied with your nice reply.

so in that case will it be fine if we first start the treatment for ocd and depression, and when he starts feeling well and happy then we can start treatment for alcoholism?

and one more thing. how likely it is that a psychiatrist will be able to convince him for medication and quitting alcohol ?

Brief Answer:
with repeated motivation almost all patient accept treatment

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Weclcome back to HCM.

In my practice those who get interaction with psychiatrist have high success rate of enrolling in treatment with repeated persuasion.
In case of your father there is high chance that once he is able to control his depressive and OC symptoms, he will ask for treatment. On pretext of depression you can take him to psychiatrist who will start motivating him from the first day. People accept treatment after few weeks or after few months. After all who do not want to live better life.
The way of interaction ultimately decides results.

Hope I am able to answer your concerns.
If you have any further query, I would be glad to help you.
