Brief Answer:
Medicines are there, dose depends on quantity and duration of intake

Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXXXXX

Thanks for writing to us.

I can understand your concern for your friend.

It is good decision to quit gutka.

Medicines are there for deaddiction of gutka.
When someone is using gutka for long term in good amount, sudden stopping of the same causes withdrawal features like restlessness, uneasiness, constipation, anxiety, sleep disturbance, no mood in doing work. These withdrawal features can be treated with the medicines.

Bupropion is the drug to treat the the tobacco deaddiction. With this, low dose benzodiazepine (clonazepam ,lorazepam or etizolam), propranolol and multivitamins are used for the treatment. Dose depends on severity of addiction.Severity of addiction and withdrawal depend on quantity, frequency and duration of intake of gutka.

Above mentioned drugs are prescription drugs and you need to consult doctor for prescription. In general deaddicition is done by psychiatrist. As he is taking since 20 years, gradually gutka should be decreased under medical supervision after starting the medicines.

Another approach is to use nicotine containing chewing gums/lozenges. But I do not prefer this as ultimately it is nicotine and one need to deaddict from it also.

Important Point: The main part of deaddiction is desire and motivation for deaddiction. To prevent health hazards like cancer, family life disturbance and economical problems(spent in gutka as well as in treatment of gutka related health problems), counseling for deaddiction is also necessary.

Hope I have answered your query, I will be happy to help further.

Regards,
Dr.Chintan Solanki.
