Posted on Wed, 18 Mar 2015
Question: I have had IBS since childhood...now at 68 I do not move my bowels for 10-16 days...I use Miralax, stool softener,
And still no relief, I had three full enemas and no result....I was in the hospital and they gave me Lactulose and that finally gave me some relief...my belly was super blown up...an x-Ray and a Cat Scan showed no obstruction....I have been home for three days using stool softener capsules plus Miralax two times a day.....still no movement and the right side of my colon is painful.....some times I Swear part of my colon has died. My twin sister suffers with the same symptoms.

Brief Answer:
Dietary measures would be very helpful.

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thank you so much for this query.

I am so sorry to hear about this difficulty moving your bowels. It must be very difficult and am very sorry to hear about this.

Honestly, only diets and some drugs can help. I will recommend a diet full of fruits, vegetables, much water and fibers. I will also want you to adopt the habit of going to the toilet at specific times irrespective of whether you have the urge to defecate or not. Together with stool softeners, ,this should provide some relief. Regular physical exercise would also help.

In the worse case scenario, if nothing works, I will like your doctors to consider the option of a stomy. I know this may sound harsh but going for 15days without stools can be a very hard and difficult thing to deal with.

I hope this helps. I wish you well. Thanks for using our services and feel free to ask for more information and clarifications if need be.
