Suggest Treatment For 10cm Mass In Right Ovary

Posted on Tue, 24 Mar 2015
Question: Hi, I had an MRI last week and it found I had a few polyps (not sure how many now) but roughly 7 cm in size and a mass (about 10cm) on my right ovary, how likely in your opinion might it be cancer? I do understand I need more investigation into this ( my consultant wants a laparoscopy ) but I feel like I just need a few more answers right now as the pain during my menstrual cycle is unbearable sometimes, also the pain in my lower back during this time along with bleeding for 2 weeks at a time are all just getting a little bit 2 much. I am 47 this year

Brief Answer:
probability of Cancer has to be ruled out

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Thanks for your query.

A 10 cm mass in ovary in a 47 year old lady raises the probability of cancer. However pain during menstruation suggests endometriosis, a benign disease. But endometriosis shouldn't surface at this age. Should have shown some symptoms earlier.

A polyp may not be cancer but still evaluation is required. May I know the CA 125 level if that has been done. That may give some idea regarding cancer short of an invasive test.

But the final answer can be obtained by biopsy which has to be done by either laparoscopy or laparotomy (open surgery). If during surgery the diagnosis is made, complete surgery ( by open surgery) will be required.

Hope this helps. I will be available to answer further follow up queries, if any.
