Question: hi. taking hydromorphone 2mg for leg pain. it says on the pill bottle to take 1 pill every 6hrs but the pain is awful long before I can take my next dose. can I try taking 2 at a time or can I try taking something else in between?? I take eloquis 5mg morning and night due to having 3 confirmed blood clots in the right leg behind my knee. which is the same leg that is sore requiring pain medication in the first place. thanks

Brief Answer:
more isn't longer.

Detailed Answer:
Ok, first, taking narcotics outside of the parameters of what you and your physician agreed to is a really bad idea. The pill count will be low, it sets up for being used to a higher dose and then the regular dose no longer works at all and this leads in short order to many problems.

I see from your previous questions that aspirin like drugs (voltaren) works. THen, there are a lot of different aspirin like drugs that vary in their chemistry and duration of action and one is likley to be bettr than others. (Mobic is nearly a 24 hr drug; celebrex acts differently than others and is often more powerful. Indocin, daypro, trilosate all are different chemical structures and all likely to act a bit differently). With some non-narcotic medicines for pain then the narcotic doesn't have to be as present all the time.

The other thing you have to know is that a proportion of drug is removed with each cycle of blood through the kidney. If the drug doses are higher more is taken out (but the same proportion). So, regardless of the amount in the blood, half of it is removed about every hour. Doubling the dose might or might not buy at most another hour.

Not worth it.
