Suggest Tests To Diagnose Pneumonia

Posted on Mon, 22 Dec 2014
Question: Hi, I had some blood work done and my hemoglobin was 9.9 and my wbc were 10.7. I had a chest xray done a week or so ago and my doctor said I have pneumonia. I went to a specialist a couple of days ago and he said I have spots on my lungs and wasn't convinced it was pneumonia. He ordered a ct scan for my lungs.

Brief Answer:
These findings are not suggestive of pneumonia!

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thank you so much for this query.

I am so sorry to hear about these findings and all the disturbing thoughts that this has caused you. Your symptoms and laboratory findings are not suggestive or conclusive of pneumonia Are they concerning? Yes but the way forward is further investigation and comparing this xray to previous xrays on file.

I side with your doctor to get a CT scan for now, no treatment is needed and you should just follow up with investigations to understand what the spots could represent. Your WBC are good and hemoglobin is lower and may need to be addressed.

Keep me updated with the evolution of these symptoms. I wish you well. Feel free to ask for more information and clarifications if need be.
