Posted on Tue, 20 Jan 2015
Question: My daughter is 1 year and 3 months old. We have come for vacation for few days to Odisha from XXXXXXX I believe the weather and water change has caused illness to my daughter but of course I am not sure of the cause. She suddenly started vomiting in middle of the night with cough substance for 2-3 times. Also had a bit of loose motion (yellow semi fluid). Based on these symptoms one of our family friends cum Pediatrician suggested Oflomac-M, Sporlac Powder and Domstal which she is continuing from yesterday. However, her loose motion has become extremely frequent (4 times in last 1 hour) and more watery with complete green color and sour (khatta) smell. Please help if possible asap.

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Welcome to Healthcaremagic
Greetings of the day

Dear Mr XXXX

You daughter is having Acute Gastroenteritis. If there is no fever and absence of blood in stools then there is no cause for concern. It is self limiting and requires supportive and symptomatic treatment.

The aim of management is

1. Prevent dehydration

2. Ensure adequate nutrition

As antibiotic and Probiotic along with antiemtic has been started it will help . I would suggest you the following

1. Give her syrup flora BC which contains Probiotic and zinc. Zinc reduces the frequency of stools

2. Ensure good intake of clean drinking water : tender coconut water , rice water , dhal water can be given

3. Curd rice : Curd is natural Probiotic and will be very helpful

4. Keep the anal region clean and dry: It is important to prevent rash occurring in perianal region. After every loose stool, wipe the area with Himalaya baby wipe and apply Zinc oxide paste.

5. Do continue rest of medication as advised

Do get back to me if you need any further assistance, will be glad to assist you.

Wishing you and your family a very happy and healthy life.

Take care

Dear Dr. D. Kaltari,

Glad to see your response. Thank you!

I wish I would have received it a bit earlier though! Since she did motion 7 times in 2 hours, we couldn't wait but rush to a nearby hospital. As you indicated, she does NOT have blood in stool and nor she has fever and the pediatrician asked the same questions.

The new prescriptions include:
- Zincogrand Syp (5ml X OD)
- Coslyte ORS Pwdr (as much as we can)
- Enterogermina Liq (2 tubes p.d.) for 5 days...couldn't know what this is for though?

Since she wasn't urinating in normal frequency since morning, he also advised that in the absence of urination for next 8 hours she needs to be admitted in hospital. Luckily she urinated about 1/2 an hour after we returned from the doctor!!

Luckily the motion has also reduced since an hour or so. We have just started the new medication and gave her nestrum rice mix just now.

Hoping for the best. Please be in touch doctor.
