Suggest Remedy For Recurrent Constipation

default
Posted on Mon, 6 Jun 2016
Question: I've had on and off constipation for over a year. BMs alternate between hard, thin and incomplete to loose, tar-like and foul smelling. I am also very gassy, and often feel nauseated. Colonoscopy showed diverticulosis. I take Rx reflux medicine. Any suggestions?

Brief Answer:
Take tablet chlordiazepoxide with clidinium

Detailed Answer:
Hello! Thanks for putting your query in HCM. I am a Gastroenterologist.

Your description of your symptoms suggest that you are having IBS-C (Irritable bowel syndrome, constipation predominant) since there is no alarming feature and colonoscopy is normal. Along with reflux disease for which you are already taking treatment

For regularizing bowel habits I will suggest you the following:
1. Take tablet chlordiazepoxide with clidinium, it comes in combination. You have to get prescription from your doctor. To be taken thrice a day, 1/2 hr before meals. This I found very useful in my patients

2. A course of probiotic

3. Fibre has to be increased along with lots of fluids

For bloating:
1. Avoid food that increase gas like beans, pulses, cabbage, peas
2. Avid food that increase acid productions like tea, coffee, citrus and spicy and fatty food
3. See if milk make your symptoms worse then please avoid it
4. Take capsule containing simethicone

I hope I have answered your query and this will help you . Wish you a good health

So thin BMs don't necessarily indicate a blockage or a twist somewhere?

Brief Answer:
Thin bowel does not mean any twist or blockage

Detailed Answer:
Welcome back

Thin bowel does not mean any twist or blockage at all. The diameter and consistency of stool depend on the diet you have taken. More fibre will make stool bulky

Moreover dont forget your colonoscopy showed only presence of diverticulae

Hope I addressed all the concerns you have. Let me know if you have further questions. I will be more than happy to clear any doubts. Wish you a good health
