Suggest Remedies For Swollen Taste Buds And Difficulty Swallowing

Posted on Fri, 20 May 2016
Question: Hi,
A month ago, I had a bad throat pain and, when I was swallowing it hurt really bad and felt like swallowing razor blades. I had a throat X ray, which showed nothing and two days later I had another throat X ray, and I was told that I had adult croupe, laryngitis. I was off work for two weeks. I did not really have much fever. Since where I live we have no specialists, one of the doctors contacted and ENT specialist in Montreal and I was suggested to take steroids to reduce swelling and also Amoxi clan, in case its bacterial, and something more serious, the name of it I cannot remember. I completed a 7 day antibiotic treatment. Most of throat pain is gone, but I still feel like there is something when swallowing. MY main question is, I have swollen taste buds in the back and scalloped tongue on the sides and the tip of my tongue is red and feels funny. Internet says that antibiotics cause some of these symptoms. I was also drinking much lemon juice. However, I have stopped drinking it for the last five days. I also have a whitish film with some yellow on my tongue. My tongue also have a small crack in the middle ( might have had this) before but not noticed. Should I be concerned? The more I read on the Internet, the more I come up various types of cancers. Or is this normal after a bad case of laryngitis and a course of antibiotics? Thank you.

Brief Answer:
Do not worry! The problems you are facing is absolutely normal...

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Thanks for posting the query

I have gone through your history thoroughly and understood your problem. I will try my best to help you out with this.

1. The throat discomfort could be either secondary to the residual inflammation in the larynx or acid reflux. As you have mentioned in your description that, you consumed plenty of lemon juice; this could have triggered acid reflux. Residual inflammation causes irritation in the throat, drinking plenty of warm water reduces this problem.

2. Secondly, the medicines which you took for laryngitis could have caused mucosal damage in the oral cavity. Do not worry! It will clear off after few days. Consume plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables.

3. Your tongue seems to be absolutely normal, except for some coating over the tongue. Coating is due to dehydration and medicines which you took.

4. Do not worry! You don't seem to have any serious issues. These are all common symptoms one faces post infection. My suggestions to you are:
a. Drink plenty of warm water (if possible, half a glass of warm water, every hour, for few days).
b. Consume plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables. This boosts up the immunity and helps you to recover faster.
c. Avoid coffee/fizzy drinks/hot & cold beverages/chips/oily food/sour food/smoking, for few days till you recover completely.

Hope this answers your query; revert back to me if you have any follow-up queries.

Thank you so much for your response. One last question: You said my tongue looked okay. So is it normal to have red and sort of inflamed taste buds on the far sides of my tongue and also on the far top until this thing clears up? Thanks again.
