Suggest Remedies For Sinus Issues After Surgery

default
Posted on Mon, 1 Feb 2016
Question: Hi, I was considering breast reduction surgery and have had sinus problems in the past. I am 60 years old, in good health but didn't want any problems during or after surgery, so I saw an ENT before surgery for a CT scan, I did have one spur in my left nostril, but he felt surgery wasn't needed. I went ahead with the breast reduction surgery 6 weeks ago, and have had a multitude of sinus problems since. Just wondering if the anesthesia could have had an effect on my sinuses, and why I am still sick.

Brief Answer:
Anaesthesia can make conditions of the nose, sinus, throat, etc; worse

Detailed Answer:
Hello ma'am and welcome.

Thank you for writing to us.

I have gone through your query with diligence an would like you to know that I am here to help. The first thing I would like to say is that, other than your anaesthesiologist no one really knows which medications were used to sedate you or put you to sleep before surgery, so the only person you should be talking to is your anaesthesiologist.

But anaesthesia can easily cause irritation to the nose, throat, sinus, etc. As you seem to be experiencing an aggravation of your sinus symptoms, you should know that anaesthesia can make upper respiratory tract symptoms worse, especially if they were present prior to the surgery.

The sinus aggravation you seem to be experiencing is due to the inhalation of dry gas during the surgery, which has resulted in the presentation you are experiencing. The first thing as I mentioned ma'am, is to discuss the whole thing with your anaesthesiologist. Once that is done, in company with your surgeon a solution must be found to help relieve you of your symptoms and make you feel more comfortable.

I hope you find my response helpful. Please feel free to write back to me for any further clarifications, I am always here to help.

Best wishes.
