Suggest Remedies For Foot Injury

Question: My daughter dropped a heavy book on the top of her foot last night. Immediately, a small knot formed and mild bruising. She is able to move her foot and bear weight. I really don't think it is broken (I am a nurse and I don't think it is nearly that severe). My issue is that she is a competition dancer and cheerleader. I want her foot to heal without further damage... She is 13 years old and has cheer tryouts and her first dance competition of the season in about 2 weeks. What can I do to allow the area to heal but she also needs to practice. Is there a brace or wrapping I should use... Please help, concerned mother! I was going to have her skip practice today and tomorrow, but she cant afford to miss much more than that.

Foot injury

Thank you for contacting HCM with your health care concerns

I am sorry to hear that your daughter injured her foot so close to her try outs. Fortunately she will heal within the next week. I would allow her to do light workouts and then next week as long as her pain is controlled to super focus on her dance and Cheer leading material. It sounds like she has soft tissue injury and this will heal fairly quickly. I may also suggest taking ibuprofen before workouts. Her trainer may also try doing some foot taping to help stabilize the foot.

In summary
1 week light exercise
2 2nd week start regular exercise and practice
3. Ibuprofen prior to exercise
4. Athletic taping of the foot
