Brief Answer:
Meftal P is more effective

Detailed Answer:

Hi,

Most often such symptoms are due to viral infections and antibiotics are ineffective in such cases. Nevertheless, since you have started antibiotics, please complete the course. Irrespective of treatment it usually spontaneously resolves in 5-7 days. Some children are more prone to catching cold and recurrent episodes are seen. Often such viral infections manifest with fever. If your child is otherwise active and playful, I would not be concerned. If not, it would be a good idea to visit a doctor and to get the child evaluated.

Such infections are frequently associated with an allergic component and it is advisable to give some antiallergic like cetirizine once daily for next few days.

You need to give steam inhalation to your child. It helps in reducing the congestion. Just sit with your child on your lap and place the source of steam before you. The water vapor will be in the air and automatically the child will breathe it in. Water vapor will reach deep inside and would help in diluting the cough and thus would provide relief. Use Nasoclear Saline Nasal Drops in case of nose block.

If your child has fever with temperature more than 100°F, you need to give paracetamol to it bring down. Also use tepid sponging. If paracetamol is not effective in bringing down the temperature, you need to use Meftal-P (mefenamic acid) which is more effective. The minimum gap between two doses of paracetamol is 4-6 hours. The doses of paracetamol and Meftal P are independent of each other. Minimum gap between doses of Meftal P is 6-8 hours. However, I do not think that they would be needed to be used simultaneously.

Please be patient. It may take a few days for the recovery to occur. It should spontaneously resolve in 5-7 days.

Zithrox Plus is for pediatric use. More importantly, administration of the correct dose is important.

Hopefully that would help. Feel free to write back in case of further queries.

Thanks for your quick response and detailed advice. I will try meftal p syrup later today to see if it brings the temp completely to normal. Will not use paracetamol syrup simultaneously. Also will complete the azithromycin 250mg OD it's full course of 6 days(now it completed 3 days). The Kid is completely active and playful during day time, so as per your advice let me wait for another 2 days, else will visit local pediatrician.

Brief Answer:
Glad to be of service

Detailed Answer:

Hi,

You can stop a course of Azithromycin at 3 days since that too counts as a full course (different regimen). Since he is otherwise active, I would not be worried even if the fever lasts 2-4 more days. Give tepid sponging. It is more important that medication.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Thanks Dr

Most of the fever symptoms are now gone. During day time today he has no fever but in the evening I measured it is 99F. on touching his body it seems cold. he is sweating a bit after running(it happens always, I mean before fever stuck). He is coughing sometimes but no sputum comes out. Anything to be worried about this 99 degree F temp? Or it will subside subsequently? Also he is showing no interest towards food.
Please suggest.
