Suggest Dosage Of Contraceptive Pill Cilest

Question: Hi,

I am concerned I may be pregnant and if I'm not, I would like to know how to resume taking the contraceptive pill cilest.

The background is that I've just returned from a month holiday with my boyfriend where we were moving round/doing hikes etc. I had my period and started taking the pill as normal for the first 5 days. I then missed pills for 2 days before losing the pack altogether. Due to being in non English speaking countries, I did not seek to get replacement pills and stupidly continued to have unprotected sex. I had irregular bleeding 2 days following my first failures to take the pill. I expected my period on Wednesday last week but this is now late.

I will do a pregnancy test today but my questions are:

- if I'm not pregnant today, when can I safely start taking cilest again? As I have recently had sex (yesterday) I am concerned that a pregnancy test today may not show an accurate result. Therefore if I do restart taking cilest and find out at a later time, that I'm pregnant will this affect the pregnancy? Had I been following my usual routine, I would be due to take cilest again from this Monday.

Thanks

Hello
Thanks for writing to us with your health concern.
I have gone through your question in detail, and here are your answers -
1. If you are not pregnant, you can start taking Cilest again on the second day of your next period.
2. You have recently had unprotected sex, so yes, a pregnancy test will be accurate only 15 days from now.
3. If you restart the Cilest and then find out that you are pregnant, it will not affect the pregnancy in any manner.
Here is what you should do.
Use a backup method such as a condom for the next 2 weeks.
Either you will find out that you are pregnant ( and hence not resume a new pack of Cilest ) or you will have your period, and start a new pack from day 2 of your periods.
HOpe this clears the confusion.
All the best
