Suggest Abdominal Bloating And Discomfort After Treating Bladder Cancer

default
Posted on Thu, 28 Jan 2016
Question: My mother had surgery for bladder cancer in November . Her bladder, uterus, etc. were removed as well as 47 lymph nodes. Cancer was detected in the bladder and 1 node. It is a high-grade cancer, stage 4 for the bladder. My question is she still is not eating anything at all except tiny amounts and yogurt and protein drinks. She has really painful gas, bloating and discomfort. We have tried everything to get her to eat "real food" and she just will not. Any suggestions?

Brief Answer:
Let her eat whatever she can enjoy and tolerate.

Detailed Answer:
Hello xxxxxxxxxx and welcome to HCM.
As an Urologist, i can fully understand and share your concern.
In stage 4, high grade bladder cancer, the Urologist would've explained the prognosis.
At her age, palliative pain care is probably, reason to prescribe marijuana like drugs.
Depression is due to the major surgery and repeat hospital visits.
Considering her condition in totality,it's difficult to take a regular meal.
She needs to take daily calorie needs, as advised by a dietitian.
Frequent small semi-solid meals, with protein supplements, and fruit juice is fine.
A laxative is very helpful.
As movements are restricted, there's bound to be gas formation, leading to bloating.
If possible, maintain some body movements, like just walking 10-15 minutes, two-three times daily. This way,a lot of gas and discomfort will be relieved.
Any form of activity should be encouraged.
Don't be very strict with diet. She should have ice-cream off and on.
After all, you're aware that, her remaining life-span isn't very prolonged.
So try your best, to let her have a good quality of life, that she enjoys.
You're welcome to ask any questions, you may have.
Wishing your mother well. God bless.
