Atherosclerosis is a common condition affecting the blood vessels mostly the small ones and sometimes can affect bigger vessels like Aorta.

Atherosclerosis involves thickening of the arterial wall due plaque formed by deposition of fatty materials such as cholesterol and triglyceride. This in small vessels can block the blood flow and can cause ischemia. In large vessels there may not be blockade to the blood flow but the plaque can get dislodged and travel through the blood to block any narrower blood vessels.

I suggest you to consult a Vascular surgeon who can identify the severity of the condition by certain investigations and plan on reducing the plaque.
