Brief Answer:
It may be a recurrent viral illness

Detailed Answer:
Hello... I understand your concern.
By what you say your grandchild may be suffering from recurrent viral fever which is a very common scenario.
Recurrent viral illness is very common.
You need to ask yourself these questions when the kid is down with fever.
1. How is the activity of the kid when the fever touches the baseline? - GOOD
2. Is there any rash over the body? - NO
3. Is there any decreased oral intake? - NO
4. Is the kid dull when in high grade fever and playing around when the fever touches the baseline? - YES
5. Are there any seizures? - NO
6. Is there any respiratory distress or fast breathing and difficulty in having food? - NO
And the if the answers are like what I have depicted in capital letters, then you need not worry and this is recurrent viral illness please.
