Question: My doctor has confirmed that my child has traces of pneumonia with the X-ray and the points were bilateral hilar lymphadenopathy and small collapse in right side. He has prescribed antibiotics augumentin with piriton can for syrup. She was also asthmatic hence we are giving levolin and budocart inhaler. She has fever for the past 4 days and am giving paracetamol for it. Is the antibiotic enough and the treatment is enough to cure pneumonia . We are asked to give augumentin for 5 days then come back after two week to see the status. Kindly provide your review

Brief Answer:
Has she had sputum test done...

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

The choice of antibiotic is based on culture and sensitivity test. In case of pneumonia culture and sensitivity test performed with sputum sample leads us to the right antibiotic. Was any such test done yet? If yes, you should look into it to identify the choice antibiotic.

Augmentin is effective for cases of pneumonia; but I prefer to use clarithromycin or cefixime to treat proven cases of pneumonia.

Nevertheless as the augmentin is already on, it will be better to wait and check response before changing antibiotic. So you can wait for next 3-5 days. In the meanwhile if there is deterioration in cough or if she develops fever report back to the doctor.

Hope this helped. Let me know if you need clarifications.

Should I repeat X-ray as soon as antibiotic is done for 5 days or should I wait as he told for 2 weeks and then check. I'd give days antibiotic enough or should I give for 7 days ?

Brief Answer:
Better to repeat X-ray after weeks...

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Chest X-ray should be repeated after 2 weeks. It should be repeated earlier if the doctor finds the condition isn't improving as expected. Therefore kindly follow up after 5 days. His doctor will be able to assess the condition clinically by symptoms and respiratory examination signs. It will also help us decide if more antibiotics are necessary.

Hope this answered your question. Let me know if you need any more information.
