My Daughter Is 16 And Athletic / Active / A

Question: My daughter is 16 and athletic / active / a dancer and generally very healthy. She has exercise induced asthma but uses an inhaler and the check up with her allergist last week was positive and he said she was doing well. She takes cingulair for seasonal allergies (we live in XXXXXXX TX) and uses Flonase.

She has had sore muscles in her back and neck for days and a headache (I suspect a tension headache) as Junior year in high school can be super stressful. Today, in addition to the back pain she started having pain in her chest and when she takes a deep breath says she feels a sharp pain in her chest. She also has a sore throat, runny nose and headache. All of these could be attributed to allergies and we have an appointment tomorrow afternoon with a P.A. However, I want to know if she needs to be seen sooner and if there are any other things I should be watching for. What are your thoughts?

Brief Answer:
Watch for high-grade fever, breathing difficulty and cough with expectoration

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for your question on 'Ask A Doctor' forum.
I can understand your concern.
I have gone through the history in details.

A possibility of viral upper respiratory tract infection (URTI) is more likely in her case.
Sore throat, runny nose, headaches are suggestive of URTI.

And this can worsen underlying asthma which causes chest pain, chest tightness, etc.
So, if she does not develop breathlessness or wheezing then you can wait till afternoon.
But if she develops breathing difficulty or any high-grade fever or cough with expectoration then you need to consult the doctor immediately.

So watch out for high-grade fever, breathing difficulty, cough with expectoration, irritability like symptoms.

Let me know if I can assist you further.
