I've Had A Tickle In My Throat/chest For A Month

Posted on Sun, 12 Apr 2020
Question: I've had a tickle in my throat/chest for a month now. First two weeks of February I had a back to back cold. Recovered well but acid reflux started creeping up. Usually zantac works well but it was recalled so I only stuck with Tums. It got worse so I gave in and started Nexium. Seemed like it helped the first week so I stopped taking it. Then it creeped up again so I started taking it but it didn't work. Changed to Prilosec and on it for 4 days now. Seems to help throughout the day but worse when I'm laying down at night. Elevating helps but it kills my back so I stopped doing it. Is this tickle in the throat a result of night time acid reflux? I want to mention that I do have anxiety too so with the coronavirus going on, I am very stressed over this situation. Also want to note that I've had an upper endoscopy before to confirm I do have gerd. But I was only told by the doctor to manage my stress level (main reason acid reflux started in the first place).

Proper medication with diet would help.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for choosing "Ask A Doctor" service for your query,

Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease is a form of digestive disorder, which affects the lower oesophageal sphincters or the muscle ring present between the stomach and the food pipe. GERD incorporates the return of the contents of the stomach back to the oesophagus. .Heartburn, also known as acid indigestion, is the primary symptom of GERD. The affected person may feel a burning in the throat. The feeling can be defined as throat with a bitter, acidic taste. The burning sensation may last as long as two hours.
After endoscopy-
An oesophageal impedance test to measure substance movement inside the oesophagus.
I would suggest you not to worry too much.Anxiety increase the problem many folds.Take lactium tablet (natural anti anxiety).Otherwise get a prescription for paroxetime and Clonazepam to curb anxiety.
Take a proton pump inhibitor like Esomeprazole 40 -80 mg twice daily along with a prokinetic drug (eg.Domperidone) initially for few days. This will provide you symptomatic relief from symptoms.Starting should be done by higher doses thereafter doses should be decreased with time.
Antacid like Pepto bismol can be taken for few days along with it. Just taking optimal doses won't help.Agressive treatment should be taken initially.
Any over counter probiotic should be taken for few days to provide relief in symptoms of indigestion.

Apart from this, some dietary restrictions are to be followed-

- Avoid alcohol or smoking.
- No aerated beverages.
- Take light non spicy easily digestible food for few days.
- No Fast food like pizza or burger should be taken.
- Drink a cup of cold milk daily.
- Avoid fatty foods.
Once proper dose of medicine would be taken symptoms would go away.
Hope i was helpful.
Thank you

Yes.

Detailed Answer:
Hi again,
Yes anxiety increases the symptoms of GERD by many folds.
