Is There Interaction Between Lexapro And Fluoxetine?

default
Posted on Mon, 11 Jul 2016
Question: My 90 year old mother may be confused by insurance companies switching her med brand names. She has both Fluoxetine and LEXAPRO at home and I think those are redundant and should not both be taken together. Thoughts?

Brief Answer:
Consultation

Detailed Answer:
Hello, and thanks for your question.

You are totally correct. Lexapro and Fluoxetine should NOT be taken together. She should only be taking one or the other. Taking both puts her at risk of serotonin syndrome, which can be deadly. Clarify with her doctor which one she should be taking.
