Is There Any Relation Between Persistent Infection And Family History Of HLA B27?

default
Posted on Mon, 1 Dec 2014
Question: Hi there. I have High Risk HPV and have had a couple of Lletz procedures over the years and it appears I have a persistant infection. My brother has recently tested posive for the gene HLA B27 and I wondered if this could be connected? I haven't as yet been tested but wondered if it can cause persistant infections as it seems that way from some basic research I have carried out. Should I get tested for this gene? After I had my baby I was still, particularly in the mornings, had a bad neck and sore legs. I was tested for reactive arthritis which came back negative. Thank you

Brief Answer:
You should get tested. No relation with HPV

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for posting your query.

Let me answer your queries one by one.
1. There is no likely connection between the high risk HPV or the persistent infections and HLA B27.
2. You should get tested for HLA B27. Since the inheritance is genetic and since you two share the same parents from whom the gene has come, there is a possibility of it being present in a sibling like you even if you have no symptoms. The risk of developing a spondyloarthropathy is about 10-20 % if there is someone in the family with arthritis.
3. There is a possibility of relation between the family history of HLA B27 and the symptoms like neck ache and sore legs. However, it can only be concluded after the test is done. Let me assure you that not all persons who are positive for this gene, develop the disease. In people who develop the disease, it often goes into remission. So you need not panic.

Hope I have answered your queries. Feel free to revert back in case of further queries if any.

Thank you for your help. My brother has alot of symptoms ie hip pain and uvitis and had troubles in the past. He was however fully tested for ankylosing spondylitis and it came back negative. Its a relief it is not connected with hpv, i was worried because it affects your immune system and for some reason i am not figting the persistant hov infection. Can you recommend anything i can do to fight hpv? It is affecting my life as i do not want to be intimate with my husband to be

Brief Answer:
Immunomodulators suggested

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for writing back. Regardless of the mode of therapy chosen, recurrence rates are high for any patient with HPV (suffering from a condition called condylomata acuminata for which you had the LLETZ). Although vaccine for HPV has no role in treating the disease, there could be complete response or partial clinical response in women with vulvar or vaginal dysplasia. So you may give it a try. Moreover, since patients with recurrent HPV infections are necessarily immunosuppressed, immunomodulators may play a positive role. Please talk to your doctor about this. Thank you, it is interesting that you say recurrance rates are high so it ay mean it wasnt persistent and i just had a recurrance? The second lletz treatment was a few years after the first and i had just gone through a pregnancy so maybe it was a recurrance rather than persistent? Thank you for giving me hopem

Brief Answer:
Recurrent not persistent

Detailed Answer:
I think that it is recurring and not actually persistent. Such recurrence is quite common and you are not the only person suffering from it. Treatment is generally intended towards reduction or elimination of genital warts. Rest is as I mentioned
Note: For detailed guidance on genetic screening consult a genetics specialist
