default
Posted on Mon, 7 Apr 2014
Question: Hello my name is XXXXXXX I am 26 years old and 5'3 and weight 116. I am currently taking ciprofloxacin XXXXXXX 500 mg tab every 12 hrs for 10 days for a UTI and was wondering if I can take my vitamin d3 5000IU a day because on the bottle of my antibiotic for my UTI it says do not take tis medicine at the same time as milk calcium. It also says take this medication at least 2 hours before or 6 hrs after magnesium or aluminum containing antacids or other products containing calcium, iron or zinc. Since the vitamin d3 stays in the system all day I was wondering if I shouldn't take them since its calcium.

Brief Answer: TAKE VITAMIN D3 AFTER GAPING THE TIME PERIOD. Detailed Answer: Hello, Thanks for writing to us. You are absolutely RIGHT. There is certain interaction between CIPROFLOXACIN and other medicines like ANTACID (containing Aluminum or Magnesium), MILK or YOGURT, IRON, ZINC, CALCIUM supplement etc. You CAN'T take both drugs (Ciprofloxacin and Vitamin D3 OR other combination) concurrently. They interact each other and makes Ciprofloxacin LESS effective by impairing intestinal absorption. Therefore, it is advised that you should avoid the above medicines within 6 hours before or 2 hours after taking Ciprofloxacin. However, you can take Vitamin D3 after gaping this time period and there will be NO interaction for Ciprofloxacin. In addition, you must drink plenty of water (2.5 to 3 lit/ day), take cranberry juice regularly, maintain genital hygiene properly, empty bladder in time, avoid unprotected sex and wear cotton underwear only. Hope, it helps for your information. Kindly, close the discussion if you don't have any other query. Wish your good health and take care yourself.
