Is There A Connection Between The Novacain, Swelling My Sinuses, And It Taking Longer Than Normal To Heal?

Posted on Tue, 12 Mar 2024
Question: When given Novacain for dental work, I get tingle sensations in teeth that have had no work done to them as it's wearing off. My sinuses seem to pose an issue too with swelling, then pushes on my nerves for my teeth. Is there a connection between the Novacain swelling my sinuses and it taking longer than normal to heal? It's causing anxiety that my teeth have an issue when they don't. When I take sinus meds or ibuprofen, it helps, but I don't want to live with that band aid if there's an issue somewhere. Am I having a side affect to the novacain since having had dental work done within two days? I'm so tired of worrying about this issue. It was awful a couple years ago, I a root canal every week for 8 weeks in different teeth, went to a nuerologist because of the nerve zings over a tooth that had work done. That took about a year to heal. I believe the anxiety about what happened then with so much work done in such a short time, has scarred me emotionally. I love my dentist, but, just don't want to keep living with this fear of the pains or zings and if they will strike.

Brief Answer:
Paresthesias most likely

Detailed Answer:

Hi,

Welcome and thanks for putting up the query.

The anesthetic effect over the nerves may at times persist for longer periods causing a tingling sensation (Paresthesias likely) but it has nothing to do with sinusitis.

If you are having sinus symptoms like nasal congestion or blockage or a headache then you should get an X-ray paranasal sinuses done.

The tingling sensation may take time to disappear. You should take tablet vitamin B12 supplement once daily for 4-6 weeks.

Kindly follow up with the X-ray picture so that I can suggest you better. Feel free to ask further.

Take care
Thanks and regards

Is it recommended to see an ENT doc for further information regarding my sinuses? Could it be a aide affect or allergic reaction to the Novacaine?

Hi
It is better to get examined yourself by an Ent specialist and get a x-ray paranasal sinuses done for sinus infection.
Paraesthesias are a very common side effect of local anesthetic injections like novacaine.
You can send me the xray picture so that I can suggest you better.
