Is Severe Fatigue In A Child Indicative Of Tardive Dyskinesia?

Question: My five year old got his vaccinations in October for his five year well visit. 8 vaccinations in all, MMRv, Polio, and DTAP. Five days later he started convulsing, his whole body every now and then, was rushed to hospital with documented discharge papers stating he had overexcited nerve from excessive vaccinations and diagnosis of autism. Then he started having legs that will not stop moving when at rest and an odd noise now has started up in throat occasionally, but up all night and it happens during day at rest with the legs. He is tired all the time and wants to sleep. Does not want to go to school and has had diarreah since. One day he could not bear weight on his left leg which tends to flail alot, but it was turned in toward right leg at ankle and he could not walk, it only lasted for a day or so about six days after vaccinations, MRI turned out fine, I researched his symptoms, it seems he may have tardive dyskenesia?

Details on muscle tone needed. Needs clinical examination.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.

I am sorry to know about the condition of your child. You should answer the questionnaire called M-CHAT (https://www.m-cyyyyyy.org/yyyyyyy.php) in order to evaluate whether your child has autism. Thereafter your doctor could confirm on it using certain other tools.

The tiredness described, is common following bouts of convulsion which he has been having. Although this could be tardive dyskinesia, the term is infrequently used in case of children. It is usually used in context of Parkinsomism (in adults) although Tardive dystonia (improper muscle tone) or Tardive tourettism (a tic disorder) can be associated with autism and hence possible. However, the movement of legs seems to be due to seizure activity although it is hard to comment without observing and examining properly. I think that you should get the sleep EEG done as planned. Suitable anticonvulsant regimen might need to be started.

The diarrhea could be antibiotic associated (if antibiotics are being given). Give plenty of curd or yogurt as it contains plenty of beneficial bacteria and should help.

Let me know if you have any further queries.

Regards
