Is Removal Of Breast Tumor Advisable For A 80 Year Old?

default
Posted on Fri, 4 Nov 2016
Question: My mother is 80 yrs old and yesterday we saw a surgeon and said he thought it was breast cancer and wanted to do a removal of the tumor and a lymph node and test it while in surgery and possibly remove her breast an lymph nodes.... my question is should we entrust that decision to a surgeon we met one time? My big question is...at her age is there anyway to tell the aggressiveness of the cancer and whether or not aggressive treatment will do any good or just make her suffer more...

She has no problem with the loss of her breast or body self image problem....We just want to make sure we don't put her thru unessesary painful treatments... this is all very sudden and I don't want her or I to make hasty decisions so she the time she has left is pleasurable as possible and follows it's natural path.

Brief Answer:
hello dear. treatment will depend upon her physiological condition

Detailed Answer:
Hello dear. I understand your concerns.

At this age it is difficult to chart out a treatment plan for cancer. However it should be noted that we consider physiological age rather than chronological (actual) age of patient while considering treatment.

If she is fit and fine , moving and taking care of self doing all routine activities with no major comorbid diseases and the blood parameters are normal , then she can withstand the surgery very well and of course a light dose of chemo as well. Your doc can decide all these factors after examining her.

Hope it's understood now.
