Is Pregnancy Possible Despite Taking Plan-B?

default
Posted on Wed, 4 Nov 2015
Question: Hello,

I'd like to know if there is a chance of pregnancy in this situation. On day 7 of the woman's cycle we had sex twice using withdrawal. On day 9 she took Plan B. On day 16-18 she had period type bleeding followed by brownish spotting. On day 24 she took a First Response pregnancy test which was negative, on day 27 she went to the OB/GYN and took a urine test which was put through a machine and was negative as well. On day 31 she took another first response test which was again negative.

She has been experiencing period-type symptoms since around day 25 but no period has come yet. Her cycles typically run around 28 days, although her last cycle was around 21 days.

Thank you.

Brief Answer:
Not pregnant

Detailed Answer:
Hello

Thanks for the query

The chances of pregnancy is extremely minimal to almost impossible for the following reasons
1. The sex was using withdrawal
2. It was during her safe period
3. Plan B was taken
4. All her pregnancy tests were negative

The reason why she is not having her period is because Plan B makes the period extremely irregular for the next three cycles. I would expect her to have her period only next month as she had a period between 16-18 day.

I recommend you to have better methods of contraception like condoms, oral contraceptive pills or copper T

I hope I was of help, if you have any further queries please get back to me

Thank you. From what I gather the bleeding around days 16-18 was "withdrawal" bleeding from the Plan B hormones. My thought is that if she was on a 21 or so day cycle, the tests would be late enough to be pretty reliable.

Is it common for Plan B to make periods late?
Also, the period-type symptoms and lack of period are making me slightly anxious as well. Not sure if that's normal or not.

Brief Answer:
Don't be anxious

Detailed Answer:
Hello

Thanks for getting back

Please don't get anxious , I have jotted down the list of reasons why the pregnancy is almost an impossibility.
Like you said there was withdrawal bleeding as well. Urine pregnancy test is a sensitive marker for pregnancy especially when it is done 13 days after ovulation. If you want a higher confirmatory test then get a Usg scan done after 5 weeks
