Is Pregnancy Possible After Having Sex Before The Expected Period?

default
Posted on Tue, 16 Jun 2015
Question: Hi. I had sex the 6th of the month. We did not use protection and he did not finish inside me. I should have started my period on the 12-13th, but have not. I was on birth control for a couple months and stopped back in January. In March my period was a week early. My period before birth control started towards the end of the month. Since this incident, in have taken a couple pregnancy tests and each have said negative. I am late on my period. Do you think I am pregnant or my period is just off?? I took a test this past Sunday and it still read negative.

Brief Answer:
Pregnancy is unlikely

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

most pregnancy tests can detect beta-chorionic gonadotropin (beta hCG) which is the hormone that rises in pregnant women right after the first missed period. If you've had so many negative tests then pregnancy is highly unlikely.

Besides that having sex only a week before the expected period cannot get you pregnant. The ovulation occurs two weeks before the first day of the period. You can get pregnant if you have sex up to 5-6 days before your ovulation date and 24 hours after it.

You can't know when your ovulation occurred if your period has not come yet though but the negative pregnancy tests make it almost 100% certain that you're not pregnant.

If you want to be 100% certain then you can measure your blood beta-hCG which is a more accurate method to detect pregnancy. Low levels would mean no pregnancy.

I hope I've helped!
