Brief Answer:
They are probably not a good idea during pregnancy...

Detailed Answer:
First of all, there are skin changes during pregnancy where certain areas on your body have increased pigmentation. This commonly occurs around the nipples and in the midline on your abdomen. These are common changes and tend to fade slightly once you are not pregnant but often do no go away completely. The same could occur in the armpit area so if you have noticed an increase in pigmentation with the pregnancy, you can be assured that it will probably fade somewhat after delivery.

Most of the whitening creams contain one of two active ingredients: Mercury or Hydroquinone. Whitening creams that contain mercury do not exist in the USA, but they do exist in some other countries. Mercury would definitely be harmful to a developing fetus. Hydroquinone is the other active ingredient and there are NO data stating whether or not it is safe during pregnancy.

So, the bottom line is:
1. Increase pigmentation in certain areas is common during pregnancy
2. This will lessen somewhat after the delivery
3. You should absolutely avoid these creams during pregnancy, especially ones that contain Mercury.

Does this help?

hi dr XXXXXXX im 19weeks and 3days today is it ok to undergo ventuza theraphy since i have back pain?

Answered by Dr. Timothy Raichle (7 hours later)
Brief Answer:
You need to check this one with your doctor

Detailed Answer:
Yes, I'm aware what Ventuza or cupping therapy is. I cannot imagine how this would harm the pregnancy. If you are somehow predisposed to bleeding or bruising, especially related to the pregnancy, then I would avoid this as well.
