Is It Safe To Have Red Wine While Suffering From Liver Cirrhosis?
Question: i have been diagnost with cirrosis. This is my last week of liver treatment. (harvoni) 6mo. hep-c. My last liver biopsy indicated that I was in 3rd stage liver disease ten years ago. My liver vitals are perfect other than hep-c and unwanted enzymes. My MELD score is 6. The only time I have experienced symtoms is when they put me on tretments (2). I did have one episode of internal bleeding. Three veins were removed from my esophigus succesfully, note - my mother had dramatic varcose viens (completely covered) requiring ace bandages. My wfe is analcohal buyer for a local grocery stroe chain and goes on trips to wine regions and likes for me to join her. Should I OBSTAIN from (Red WIne Only for me in moderation) all alcohol as I have during treatment? Or enjoy 1-2 glasses per week as I have in the past. I want a laproscpy to look at my liver instead of ultra sound to be sure ofthe cirrosis diagnosis. Can I have it both ways?
Brief Answer:
Red wine consumption can lead to further liver damage
Detailed Answer:
Hello and Welcome
I appreciate your concern
Red wine consumption greatly increases your chances of developing complications associated with cirrhosis. I would advise against it. An ultrasound guided liver biopsy would be much more accurate compared to laproscopic view of the liver, in the diagnosis of cirrhosis.
Wishing you best of health
Thanks
