Question: I have recently been diagnosed with early uterine cancer....I was also told that I would need to have a completely hysterectomy and radiation will be needed. Is this the normal procedure and treatment for this dx?

65 yrs old....no previous issues except occasional spotting for weeks, which led to visit to ob/gyne.

Brief Answer:
Both are current standard of care

Detailed Answer:
Hi dear. Thanks for giving me an opportunity to address your query.

I should appreciate you since you had the diagnosis at an early stage which can be managed effectively. This improves the quality of life.

Hyseterctomy and radiotherapy is the current standard of care for early stages of uterine cancer(Stage 1).Surgery reduces tumor load(uterus) and radiation kills the cells which cannot be removed by surgery (cells that might have spread to surrounding tissues).Early stages have favourable prognosis.

Beyond this stage it is managed by surgery plus a choice between radiation or chemotherapy.

Hope this answers your query.

Brief Answer:
Both are equally effective

Detailed Answer:
Hi dear.Thanks for writing back.

Initial stages of tumor is managed by removal of uterus & ovaries(radial hysterectomy) & analysis of the lymph nodes for the presence of cancer cells.More importantly the involvement of surrounding tissues can be noted during surgery -clinical staging.

Thus depending on the involvement-surgery with or without radiotherapy or chemotherapy or both is chosen by your MD.

Radio or chemo is done only to prevent the recurrence of the tumor especially if it is high grade. Both are equally effective.

Hope this answers your query.
