Question: My hemoglobin runs anywhere between 10.9% and 11% My doctor wants me to take iron which I do but then there is the constipating side effect. I take Phillips Milk of Magnesia tablets which help some. I love steak but then there is the cholesterol problem. I also eat spinach, and XXXXXXX This hemoglobin has been a lifetime problem and I mean since age 3 or four when the doctor had me eating rarely cooked steak.

Brief Answer:
Hello. DIetary changes are advised.

Detailed Answer:
Hello dear. Welcome. I would advise some dietary changes. At this age i think a hemoglobin of 11 to 12 will be sufficient for you and you should not chase hemoglobin unless you have symptoms for anemia like shortness of breath, extreme lethargy etc. Dietary changes are
Eat more of green leafy vegetables, beans. nuts, jaggery, white meat(poultry).
You can try syrup form of iron in small doses which is less constipating.

Also i would like to know your serum iron, serum ferritin and iron saturation levels.
It will be good if you can undergo these tests.
Thanks and regards

As soon as I receive my lab report I will look to see if those tests were done. If not I will see if my doctor is willing to order them Will keep you posted.
