Is Heart Attack A Risk Factor In A Patient Suffering From Varicose Veins?

default
Posted on Fri, 15 Apr 2016
Question: I have varicose veins and I drive for a living. I am on the road at least 6 hours a day. I have heavy support stockings which do help with the pain. This weekend my left leg swelled to double in size from the knee down and became very tender to the touch. I have water pills which I took and drank as much water as I could through-out the day. The swelling finally came down some. By the second day it was almost normal. It did leave the inside of my left leg very tender to the touch and I am concerned about blood clots etc. I am on medication for high blood pressure and high cholesteral. Am I in danger of a stroke or heart attack?

Brief Answer:
You are in danger of blood clots especially to the lungs!

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thank you so much for this query.

I am so sorry to hear about these varicose veins. This is even more complicated because of your profession. I understand it s important to continue working to keep ends meet but this seems to be costing your health. A stroke or hear attack form clots in the limbs is unlikely. However, you are at increased risk of pulmonary clots which can be very severe as well. I will suggest that your doctor evaluates your clotting profile to see if there is need for blood thinners to help prevent clots seen the blood stagnation and your profession which are major risk factors. Also, talk to your company and see if there are possibilities of taking on another job which doesn’t require several hours on the road to improve on this.

I hope this helps. I wish you well. Thanks for using our services and do feel free to ask for more information and clarifications if need be.
