Is Arthroscopy Effective In Treatment Of Walking Difficulty?
Question: My wife (Age 54) fell from a chair (2.5 feet hight) two months before. She continued
with regular routine except her morning walk. After three days morning walk continued
(Motorised Tread Mill). But after two days the pain became intense with swelling and
difficulty to bend the knee. On approaching doctor, some analgesic tablets were given,
but without much improvement but Swelling and pain was reduced.About 10 days backwhile
walking on an inclined road, all of a sudden a very severe pain was felt at the same
spot (Right Knee).After words an MRI and Bone Scan was done. The reports are attached.
The doctor has suggested Arthroscopic Menisule Balanceing Procedure.
At present she find it difficult to stand or walk for more than 10 minutes comfortably.
No pain but feel like loosing strength of leg.
Reports are attached.
The questions are
1. Whether the Arthrscpic procedure is a must? Any other options?
2. Whether the problem can be takled completly by the procedure?
3. The procedure is partial or full balancing?
4. How may days it will take to become completly normal?
5. What about the enchondroma referred to in the MRI?
6. During the bone scan she was given radioactive XXXXXXX Even after three days she has
acidity. Why?

After seeing the attached MRI reports and difficulty in walking around ,I feel she needs Arthroscopy surgery in her right knee.In this we remove the loose and torn meniscus part that is partial balancing is done. It is safe and usually patient's do well after the procedure.
After the procedure patient may be discharge after a day or two followed by physiotherapy.
Enchondroma are benign tumor usually do not require any treatment unless causing symptoms.The radioactive XXXXXXX will get metabolised in few days time and you may give her cap.pan D to treat acidity.

How may days it will take to become completely normal and be able to walk/use treadmill? Also, post surgery is it required to put brace or anything over the knee that will not allow to bend her legs till it recovers?

It usually takes 4-6 week time before the patient is allowed tread mill.After the surgery creppe bandage (compression elastic bandage )is given for 2-3 week's time.Usually this is sufficient and patient do not require long belt.
