Is the anal canal canal the only anatomical place warts caused the HPV can complete their life cycle. That is, can they live in the non genital areas of the skin for instance?

Well, HPV may live in whole genital area including penis, pubic area and perianal. It may also bi in active or inactive form. In active it usually presents with warts and in inactive form there are no warts and man can still be contagiousbut the risk is very low.
Unlike this, cancer caused by HPV is almost always in anal canal similar as in women where it is found in cervix of uterus. It happens because anal mucosa is sensitive and this is place where cancer develops. Skin cancers causes by HPV are very rare and these usually manifests with benign warts.
