Brief Answer:
Mostly physiological.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thanks for posting your query.

Racing heart or 'palpitation' as it is called is an usual phenomenon during pregnancy and can be due one of these several causes---

---anemia
---tiredness
---anxiety
---dehydration
---associated thyroid anomalies
---hypertension
---heart disease.

During the early second trimester as you are in, hypertension and heart disease do not cause much symptoms; in fact, symptoms appear when the fetal demands increase as in the mid-trimester toward the late trimester. These can easily be identified through clinical exam and lab tests. Previous history is also significant.

After trying to identify the notable causes, holter monitoring may be done to look for the specific type of abnormality and relate it to a specific cause.

Please see a cardiologist in consultation with your obstetrician to evaluate the condition further. Most often, this palpitation in pregnancy is physiological.

Hope your query has been answered. Please feel free to contact for further clarifications. I will be happy to help.

regards,
Shanti.V.

Hello, I am 28 weeks pregnant and was taking aciphex for heartburn (rx d by my OB). I had screening labs done for my visit, ALT elevated, TBili normal, I had a few episodes of clay colored stools. I have no other symptoms whatsoever, no abd pain, fever, nothing. All other labs normal, incl platelets. I emailed my OB, but do you think I have/had drug induced hepatitis? I m concerned about preeclampsia. This is my first pregnancy. Thank you.

I am a 30 yr old female, 5'4" 160lbs...I have PCOS and after metformin treatment I sucessfully conceived. I had preeclampsia while pregnant with my first child, who is almost 3 yrs old. My blood pressure reached 220/125 before I was induced. It returned to a more normal but still elevated 135/70 within a few months. Since January my blood pressure has gone back up to 150-160/95-105 and over the past weekend it reached 189/116 and would only go down to 150/98 when lying on my side. I have had a severe headache that began like a stiff neck on the left side over the fourth of July holiday and the pain continued for a few weeks on that side. I still have headache pressure in a band across my forehead and the back of my head. Last night my neck began to swell on the right side. I have an appointment in 3 weeks, but am wondering if this is something that I need to go to an urgent care center for now as I am fearful of a stroke with the high blood pressure.

Im 33 weeks pregnant and had a sudden spike in my blood pressure. It went to 170/110 but slowly went down throughout the day. Was feeling horrible (headache, anxious, very hot and flushed) during the spike and all symptoms except the headache have went away. All bloodwork came back normal except my liver function panel was a bit off. Awaiting 24 hr protein test results and am on bedrest until all tests come back. My BP s have stayed normal (110/78 range) since the spike. Is it possible to have preeclampsia with normal BP s, or is it possible to have random spikes that high and nothing be wrong?
