Posted on Tue, 3 Jun 2014
Question: Ive read a few studies from a couole years back on selegiline and its positive effects its had on opiate withdrawal and major depression. I have found it has been approved to help with the major depression, but I cant find anything about it being an approved method for getting off opiods. Could you tell me if it had been recognized as having these properties or not? Thank you

Hello,
Thanks for choosing health care magic for posting your query.
I have gone through your question in detail and I can understand what you are going through.
Selegeline is a MAO inhibitor and was used for depression in the past. There were some scant reports of its use in opioid dependence. However these reports never became popular and marred by the side-effects this option was never recognized for the treatment of opioid dependence. Infact suboxone is a good option and there isa role of bupropion in the treatment of opioid dependence. Secondly the use of selegilline has itself fallen out of favour for the treatment of depression due to its varied drug interactions.
Hope I am able to answer your concerns.
