Question: My recent SGPT/ALT liver count was 56 at my recent physical the SGOT/AST was in the normal range. There were no notations or suggests as to what I needed to do or whether I needed to be concerned. What does this mean?

Brief Answer:
at the moment, no need for concern

Detailed Answer:
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

You do not need to be concerned at this stage.

The normal range for ALT/sgpt may vary slightly from one lab to the next due to different techniques and equipment but in general the upper limit is 56 for most labs.

This means that the normal accepted highest value is 56. If your lab also uses this as an upper limit, your result would be considered normal.

Even if a value is slightly above the upper limit, there is no reason for concern because a small increase would not mean that there is any significant impairment in liver function though would need to monitor to see if it increases.

At the moment the most common reasons for liver disease are: (a) non alcoholic fatty liver disease- build up of fat in the liver causing inflammation and damage due to diet, inactivity etc

(b)alcohol use

(c)infection

(d) side effect of medication eg statins

I hope this helps, feel free to ask any other questions
