Is HRIG vaccine the same as anti-Rabies vaccine?

Posted on Thu, 2 Jun 2016 in General Health
Question: What is the difference between the Human rabies immune globulin (HRIG) vaccine and anti rabies vaccine?
Answered by Dr. Divakara 1 hour later
Brief Answer:
Vaccine is virus but HRIG is not .

Detailed Answer:

Greetings from Dr.Divakara.P
Thanks for posting your query.

Vaccine is a product obtained by deactivating the disease causing Virus or bacteria ( Rabies virus in this case ) . So vaccine is basically an inactivated Virus or bacteria. By taking a vaccine the human body produces a protective substance called Immunoglobulin . This immunoglobulin protects the body from future infection from that particulr Virus / Bacteria.

While Rabies Immunoglobulin is a ready made preparation of Immunoglobulin ( protective substance produced by the body against Rabies Virus ) . This advantage of HRIG is it gives immediate protection by inactivating the Virus but a vaccine can give protection only after completing full course which may take weeks to months.

So bottom line

Vaccine is Inactivated Virus
HRIG is protective substance produced in human body ( not a Virus )

Hope this information was useful to you.
Any clarifications feel free to ask.
