Posted on Fri, 11 Mar 2016
Question: Sir,
i had an unprotected intercourse exposure with a female some days back. since then i am worrying about HIV contraction and abstained relations with my wife. i got HIV 1/2 & P24 COMBO TEST yesterday after 22 days of exposure which has come non reactive with value 0.24. Is this any indication of my chances of HIV contratction at this stage and Can i have unprotected intercourse with my wife based on this result?

Brief Answer:
It is better to wait for some time before unprotected sex with your wife

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX,
Thanks for writing in to us.

I have read through your query in detail.
Please find my observations below.

1. The test you got done is considered conclusive for HIV 1 when it is done after 30 days from the sexual event.

2. For HIV 2 the test should be done again after 6 months for confirmation.

3. In our country 2 percent cases of HIV are due to HIV 2 and therefore there is a less chance of HIV 2 when compared to HIV 1 infection.

4. Ideally speaking you should not have unprotected sex with your wife till you do the test again after 6 months.

5. However if you can wait for 3 months and then go for the test and have a normal report then it will be over 99 percent safe.

Hope your query is answered.

Brief Answer:
Combo test is accurate after 30 days for HIV 1 infection

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX,
Thanks for writing back with an update.

1. The combo test is latest test and conclusive after 30 days in many countries. After 3 weeks it is 97 percent reliable and 30 days from the event it is conclusive for HIV infection.

2. Testing for p24 antigen is accurate as told by him and helps to detect HIV 1 virus. It is important to know that p24 is not there in HIV 2 and therefore if a person has HIV 2 infection then p24 test will be normal.

3. The HIV 1 and 2 antibodies in combo test can take 6 months to become positive. Therefore keeping in mind HIV 2 infection it is better to do the test again after 6 months.

Hope your query is answered.
