Is FBS Level Of 103 Mg/dl A Cause For Concern?

default
Posted on Tue, 20 Sep 2016
Question: My mom is 50 years of age. Her weight is 66 kg and height is 5.7. Three months back, when her FBS was tested, it was 85 mg/dl. And her post meal sugar value was also well within range(not remembering the exact value). After , three months when checked on a glucometer, her FBS was 103 mg/dl. I read somewhere it slightly falls under 'Pre diabetes' range. Is this true? How can the FBS vary so much in 3 months time?

Brief Answer:
I may suggest HbA1c.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thanks for your question.
Noted your concern.

Fasting blood sugar may vary with calorie content of dinner, duration of blood collection between night time calorie consumption and time of blood sample collection.

Fasting blood sugar between 100 and 125 is considered as pre-diabetic state.

If she had no family history of diabetes there is a rare possibility of pre-diabetes.
To confirm it I may suggest to do HbA1c.

Hope this helps.

Thank you doctor.
If at all one has prediabetes, how much time does it take to develop into type 2 diabetes if she doesn't take care of his/her calories. She is a tea-addict. The reason I ask this is because my mom is foody in nature. Loves eating rice two times. She gets tensed when asked to control her diet. But she is normally very active cooking food in the kitchen. She walks for 20 mins 5 days in a week.

Brief Answer:
One cannot predict duration of developing Type 2 diabetes.

Detailed Answer:
One cannot predict duration for conversion of Prediabetes to diabetes.
If Prediabetes status is confirmed diet modification and lifestyle modification (regular exercise and maintain her current BMI) is important.
In some cases there is a good chance of reversal of Prediabetes status to normal.

I may not suggest any stringent diet restriction if she is not in Prediabetes range.
Only tell her to burn extra calories consumed by physical activity.
Hope this helps.

Thank you once again.

Once more small clarification before I close this.

Just saw at the prescription , it says RBGS = 103 mg/dl and doctor at the lab said its pretty normal. But she got it tested early morning on a empty stomach.

I am confused whether it was FBS or RBGS. Are there different meters for FBS and RGBS. Can you please clarify?

Brief Answer:
RBS is Random Blood sugar level.

Detailed Answer:
FBS is a Fasting Blood Sugar level it means blood sugar level done after no calories consumption for at least 8 hours overnight.

Random Blood Sugar level is blood sugar level irrespective of timing of calorie consumption.
Value more than 200 in the presence of osmotic symptoms (increased thirst, hunger, weight loss, increased frequency of urination) considered as diabetes.
One cannot define Prediabetes status based on RBS.

There may be possibility of less than 8 hours duration between night time calories intake and blood sample collection that's why it is labeled as RBS.

Hope this helps.
