default
Posted on Mon, 23 Jun 2014
Question: I am on atacand 16 mg a day for blood pressure. Were there any recalls on this drug and can a body get used to it and not work? I've been taking it for several years and it worked great. Yesterday my BP was 146/124-kind of high. Thanks

Brief Answer:
Dose readjustment+ combination may be needed

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for asking!
Atacand is an angiotensin receptor blocker and is an antihypertensive drug of choice these days. The issue of tolerance is not that much with these ARBs. Sometimes uncontrolled hypertension needs dose titration from 8 to 32 mg in two divided doses 12 hourly and they work like charm.A combination treatment with lisinopril is then sought if the issue of hypertension still persists. Rest assured it works, its just the matter of hypertension getting resistant and more challenging to the medicines day by day. Tolerance is for mostly addiction medicines and medicines used to kill bacteria as they get resistant. These drugs basically act on receptors inside the body and they keep acting as receptors stay there. They may up regulate or downregulate as per needs but they never finish and so these drugs never stop working.Stay in touch with your doctor for dose readjustments and let them decide what is best for you.Meanwhile keep your diet and lifestyle modifications to the best of human possibility and reduce salt intake to less than 2 mg per day to spare the consequences. As they say prevention is better than cure.
I hope it addresses your query. take good care of yourself and don't forget to close the discussion please.
