I'm At A Loss On What To Do. My Dr

Posted on Mon, 15 Jul 2019
Question: I'm at a loss on what to do. My dr diagnosed me with anxiety and depression. I've been on buspar 1 month and wellbutrin a week today. I would of thought the buspar would be working by now but all i do is worry. I was also hoping that my appetite would be getting stronger but no. My stomach is SO hungry but I just cant feed it. My back hurts and my whole abdomen is sore... i think because of lack of nourishment. I have an appointment with my dr in 2 weeks for a follow up. Ive also had a colonoscopy and endoscopy within the month and everything is nornal but my acid reflux is still there. I will also be honest and tell you google surely doesnt ease the mind. i barely type in my symptoms and it says i have pancreatic cancer. So naturally I'm worried about that now. Any advice would be greatly appreciated

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome to "Ask a Doctor" service,

I carefully read your query and fully understand your concern, especially related to Google raising more questions than giving answers.
Pancreatic cancer may cause loss of appetite but there are several other more common conditions that cause this, depression being one of the most common ones. Pancreatic cancer causes weght loss, diabetes, jaundice, blood clots, upper abdominal pain that spreads in the back, etc.
If you have only loss of appetite for some months with no important weight loss or presence of the above symptoms it is unlikely you have cancer. Loss of appetite can be due to depression as well.
On the other hand, diagnosis of pancreatic cancer is not done by colonoscopy, an ultrasound is needed as the first step.

To conclude:
- it is always best to discuss your medical concerns with a doctor rather than googling them as this may cause more anxiety and confusion.
- Depression is a common cause of loss of appetite and is a likely cause in your case
- Pancreatic cancer may cause loss of appetite but is associated with other symptoms as well as explained above.
- Ultrasound is the exination to evaluate the pancreas if suspicious symptoms are present
- As for anxiety and depression, I would advice you to combine treatment with medications with psychotherapy for better results.Avoiding caffeine. smoking and alcohol is advisable and also trying to be active, exercising and going for walks or found pleasurable activities. Regular checks with your doctor are crucial for a good monitoring of your symptoms. TSH blood test is sometimes needed to rule our thyroid as a cause of anxiety and depression.

I hope this answers your query. I remain at your disposal in case further medical assistance is needed.
