Question: I have had bronchitis which I have had few times I'm 41. Never have I had this symptom... when I blow my nose my left nasal cavity will pit out liquid that's like a really pale yellow almost clear. My headaches are insane but I have fibromyalgia so I'm used to migraines. The liquid stops after a bit but it's like a bad nose bleed but clear.

Brief Answer:
Sinusitis is common. It is also important to rule out a rare CSF leak.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for your query.

1. The source of the pale yellow almost clear mucus is most commonly due to a sinusitis and common cold.

2. Start a mucolytic (such as ambroxol or bromhexine). Anti-allergic medication may help but may increase the dryness. Have you had any allergy tests done in the past for your chronic bronchitis?

3. A nasal examination should be done, if possible with a nasal endoscopy. In view of the severe headaches, rare CSF (Cerebrospinal Fluid ) leaks should be ruled out.

4. It may be possible for you to collect this nasal discharge in a sterile container or a nasal swab should be sent for bacterial and fungal culture. The nasal fluid can be sent for routine microscopic examination and a Beta 2 Transferrin test.

5. Other rare conditions will require direct consultation and examination. If your condition does not settle with routine medication, I would get a CT Scan of the nose and paranasal sinuses done.

6. Upload images of the endoscopy and your test results for further treatment options.

I hope that I have answered your query. If you have any further questions, I will be available to answer them.

Regards.

I dont have chronic bronchitis I just get it like once a yr I'm a stay at home mom and always with germy kids so I always wait too long to go to dr. as for sinusitis I have never had it but there is no pain in or around my nose that's what I was thinking was weird. I will definitely make an appointment with my dr. My headaches are like almost a wrap arund affect it starts in lower back of my head/neck then goes all the way around to my jaw almost. oh and it only pours out the left nostril but it stops so that's good sign I would hope. As for allergy tests no but I am seeing a dermatologist for my hives but they say that it is part of the immune disease. Thank you for helping me by the way

Details as discussed below:

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for following up.

1. If your bronchitis is occasional or seasonal, all the more reason to get allergy tests done.

2. Sinusitis can also present with headaches, though the headache distribution that you now describe seems like either a cluster headache, tension headache, temporo-mandibular joint pain or migraine.

3. One sided intermittent nasal discharge should be investigated.

I hope that I have answered your query. If you have any further questions, I will be available to answer them.

Regards.
