I Have Been Dealing With Reoccurring Sinus And Bronchial Infections

Posted on Sun, 14 Oct 2018
Question: I have been dealing with reoccurring sinus and bronchial infections for about 4-5 months. I first had a Z pac followed by another because it had not cleared up. About 2 weeks later it was back. This time I was given 5 days of prednizone and 10 days of Cefdinir. A couple weeks later I was back at the dr. and given 10 more days of cefdinir. Less than a week and I started with all the coughing etc. again, only this time I had fevers of 100 to 101 degrees 3 nights in a row. I was seen again and back on the cefdinir and steroids. I just finished the 10 days of antibiotics yesterday, but still struggling with major drainage and cough. I am allergic to amoxicillin and doxycycline so those weren't considered. Does this antibiotic stay in my system an continue to work for a while after finishing the dosage prescribed?

Detailed Answer:
Hello and Welcome to 'Ask A Doctor' service...
I've gone through your query in details...
I can understand your concern...

Well, it seems like you've been through a lot already!! It's good that there was no pneumonia.

Coming directly to your query: Yes, they do stay in our system (although duration can vary, it's generally for up to 3-5days) even after completion of the full course.

Since it's recurring despite the antibiotics therapy so often, I'd also consider getting a few more investigations done for further evaluation. Namely, a complete Hemogram with ESR, Sputum gram stain, AFB, fungal stain as well as Culture sensitivity assay and a CT-PNS(Paranasal sinus).

All these will clarify things further as to establish the diagnosis also. Sinusitis can be secondary to numerous pathogens (the offending bug could already be resistant to these antibiotics, so a detailed evaluation should be carried out).

Please discuss these with your doctor and proceed further.

Additionally, please refrain from having any cold beverages, extreme sour foods as they can further worsen the symptoms. Avoid going to any dusty/overcrowded places for the time being.

Take steam inhalation thrice daily. Always ensure to wash your hands with antibacterial hand-wash before and after handling the respiratory secretions, sputum etc. Do wear face masks whenever going outside.

Have plenty of hot beverages (soups, broths, hot menta tea) as they'll work as an immunity booster.

Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take Care
Kind Regards
